E-Readers

-->

Apologies for being off the net for so long. I’ve been swamped with the new job and all, but things are going well and I’m hoping to gradually make my way back into the blog-o-sphere.  Today I’m debating the ultimate reader/writer’s debate…to e-read or not to e-read?

I’m pretty tempted by all the great e-readers out there, so really it’s just a choice of what to get. I know people love their Nooks, Kindles, and iPads, and each have their pros and cons. Some are more expensive than others, but may have a wider variety of features.

So for those of you with e-readers, what’s your preference? Do you use your e-reader for more than just books? Are there perhaps other alternatives than the three types of e-readers I mentioned?

  1. For me, I'm a Kindle girl. I got my first Kindle (2nd generation) in December 2008. Then, last November, I got a Kindle Fire. I read almost exclusively on my Kindle Fire now. Plus it's nice to watch the occasional movie/TV show, play a game, check my email (do a lot of that on my Fire), and listen to music. As far as e-readers go, it's all based on what you want to do with it. Most are in stores too, so you can play around with the features before buying.

  2. Hello Mark:
We are so pleased to know that you are enjoying your new job and that all is going well with it.

As for e-reading, we are afraid that we rather deplore the idea of forsaking books, to be held in the hand, to be cherished, and to be returned to, in favour of a piece of sophisticated technology. But that is only a view and one which is not necessarily shared by others.

  3. Depends on what you want to do with your eReader. My parents have the Nook tablet and love it.
I wanted more, which is why I'm on my third iPad now. (Can't resist the upgrades.) In addition to reading books (in the dark because the screen is backlit or in bright light with background adjusted) I watch movies, surf the web, listen to music, play games, take pictures and video, type, etc. Basically, there's an app for anything you want to do. I does cost more than the others, but you can't beat it for versatility and storage. It's just one step below a laptop.
I know, Apple really should pay me to plug their products.

  4. I'm seriously considering a kindle fire. I own a lot of kindle books already thanks to my phone, and it would be awesome to have something that is easier to read on. I'm thinking of switching to a basic flip phone, so the fire would be a good move for me. But still, it's quite the leap to take :)

  5. Glad to hear things are going well. :)

While I don't have an e-reader, nor do I plan on getting one, it's interesting to read the comments here.

  6. I have had my issues with Amazon, but since I learned how to lend e-books from the library, I've really enjoyed my Kindle Fire. The ease at which I can borrow titles is amazing. And I love "flipping" virtual pages with a flick of the finger. It's fun!

  7. I'm an iPad girl. It is rather heavy, but I like the larger screen.

  8. Hey, the job that pays is important!

I have a Kindle, and it's okay. It's convenient for travel mainly because of size and weight, oh, and that instant gratification of downloading a novel in ten seconds. But I have to admit I still prefer a good old fashioned paper book.

  9. I am planning to buy an iPad. I had also downloaded Kindle for PC and filled it with lots of books.

Glad to know that your new job is going well. How is the writing going?

  10. I had a Nook and liked it, but now I have an iPad (hubby got the Nook). I love it. It's more versatile and robust for what I need it to do (like type notes at conferences--I have an attached keyboard). I have Nook and Kindle apps, so I can get my ebooks from wherever.

    I LOVE it!

  11. I got myself a Kindle in 2010, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. My iPad is for work, but I have the free Kindle app on it; however, I don't enjoy the glowing computer screen when I'm reading.

  12. I have an older Nook, but I rarely use it. If I had to do over again, I'd get the kindle.

Have a great rest of the week.
